Waiguru Distributes 5,800 Free Gas Cylinders, Unveils Climate Action Plan to Boost Community Resilience

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has distributed 5,800 free gas cookers to local households as part of a major climate action and community resilience initiative aimed at reducing reliance on firewood and charcoal.

Speaking at a well-attended event at Kamiigua Grounds in Kutus, Waiguru unveiled a wide-ranging climate response plan that includes clean energy adoption, improved sanitation, sustainable agriculture, and water access—efforts she said are key to building resilience and protecting the environment.

“Our goal is to empower communities with practical solutions that address the climate crisis while promoting health, economic growth, and sustainability,” she said.

The governor highlighted that switching to clean cooking will not only reduce indoor pollution and deforestation but will also save hundreds of mature trees annually. Plans are also underway to launch a clean cooking training program for women at Kibingoti Polytechnic.

In addition to the gas cookers, the county distributed 10,000-litre water tanks to 20 community groups for rainwater harvesting to boost food security through kitchen gardens. To support waste management, Waiguru handed over 26 garbage skips and a skip loader truck, while announcing the construction of a Material Recovery Facility to promote recycling and job creation.

Agricultural initiatives included the distribution of dam liners to 60 farmers for fish farming and irrigation, alongside fish feed production machines to cut feed costs. The county also pledged to distribute macadamia and avocado seedlings to 20,000 farmers in the next rainy season to promote agroforestry and farmer income.

Waiguru also announced progress on key water projects like the Inua Jamii Rupingazi and Rukenya Irrigation initiatives, which will enhance access to clean water and reduce reliance on rain-fed farming.

Other community support included tents, chairs, and a public address system for self-help groups, and equipment for Kirima Dairy Cooperative Society to ensure milk quality.

County leaders including Speaker Murimi Mutemi and MCAs praised Waiguru’s development agenda, which they said has remained focused on transforming livelihoods. Waiguru reiterated her administration’s commitment to sustainable development, with the upcoming Sagana Industrial City forming a critical part of her agro-industrial strategy.
