Safaricom Launches ‘Bonga for Biogas’ Campaign to Power Smallholder Farmers with Clean Energy
The three-year campaign aims to accelerate access to clean energy for smallholder farmers.
Safaricom customers can now use their Bonga Points to access clean energy solutions, thanks to a new partnership with renewable energy company Sistema.bio.
The initiative, dubbed ‘Bonga for Biogas’, allows customers to redeem their loyalty points to acquire biodigesters or donate points to support other farmers across Kenya.
The campaign aims to empower smallholder farmers by converting livestock waste into clean biogas and organic fertilizer, thereby reducing methane emissions, boosting agricultural productivity, and promoting climate-smart farming practices.
“This campaign aligns with our broader commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly on climate action, clean energy, and reduced inequalities, while also advancing our purpose of transforming lives,” said Fawzia Ali-Kimanthi, Chief Consumer Business Officer at Safaricom PLC. “We believe that the Bonga for Biogas initiative will transform the lives of smallholder farmers across the country.”
Eng. Madrin Maina, Africa Director at Sistema.bio, emphasized the campaign’s potential to drive regenerative agriculture: “Smallholder farmers are the backbone of Kenya’s economy, yet many still lack access to clean, affordable energy. This campaign helps them turn farm waste into clean energy, and we couldn’t ask for a better ally than Safaricom to scale this impact.”
How the Safaricom, Sistema.bio Bonga for Biogas Campaign Works
Safaricom customers accumulate Bonga Points through regular usage. Under the ‘Bonga for Biogas’ campaign, they can:
-
Redeem points to acquire a biodigester by dialing *126#98, enabling them to produce clean energy from livestock waste on their farms.
-
Donate Bonga Points to support other farmers in need, spreading the impact of clean energy to more communities.
-
Organizations can also contribute their Bonga Points to benefit vulnerable farmers.
The initiative brings together sustainability, innovation, and inclusive development, creating a pathway for clean energy access and climate resilience in rural Kenya.
