d.light Reaches 200 Million Lives Touched with Affordable Solar Tech and Clean Energy Solutions

Global social enterprise d.light has surpassed a significant milestone, positively impacting the lives of over 200 million people worldwide, including more than 90 million school-aged children, through its affordable and sustainable solar-powered products.

Founded in 2007 at Stanford University, d.light aims to transform one billion lives through access to clean, reliable energy. With over 32 million homes now powered by its products, the company has expanded beyond solar lanterns into TVs, clean cookstoves, and smartphones, further advancing its vision.

As part of its scale-up efforts, d.light has expanded its Brighter Life by d.light (BLd) Receivables Financing Facility. The initiative now manages over USD $300 million in purchasing power, with a combined total of $842 million in receivables financed across five facilities since 2020.

“This milestone is more than a number—it represents brighter homes, more children studying at night, families connected to information, and communities empowered through clean, reliable energy,” said Nedjip Tozun, d.light’s Co-Founder and CEO.

To celebrate this milestone, d.light says it will donate solar kits to 200 health clinics across Africa, in a symbolic move that reflects its founding story. The company’s journey began when co-founder Sam Goldman, then a Peace Corps volunteer in Benin, witnessed a tragic kerosene accident involving a neighbor. That moment inspired the creation of d.light’s first product—a solar lamp to replace unsafe and polluting kerosene lighting.

Operating across Africa and India, d.light combines last-mile distribution with pay-as-you-go financing, enabling access to energy and technology for low-income families living on less than $5 a day.
