MBAK Energy Solutions Targets African EV Market with Launch of E-Taxi Bikes in Nairobi

MBAK Energy Solutions has officially entered the African electric mobility market with the arrival and assembly of its first electric taxi bikes in Nairobi, Kenya.

The long-awaited e-bikes have now reached MBAK’s local partner, Carbon Zero Mobility (CZM), for final assembly, marking a major milestone in the company’s expansion strategy across the continent.

The rollout in Nairobi is the first step in MBAK’s larger goal of transforming public and commercial transport in Africa through affordable and sustainable e-mobility solutions. The company, known globally for its advanced work in lithium, sodium, and solid-state battery technologies, says it is now turning its focus toward emerging markets in Africa, where demand for clean and efficient transportation is rapidly rising.

The initial launch has already generated significant traction. MBAK’s sales office has received pre-orders for 700 e-bikes from customers in West Africa, prompting the company to revise its original forecast of 2,000 units to 10,000 units by 2026. The overwhelming response is an indication of growing confidence in electric mobility across the continent and MBAK’s ability to scale rapidly to meet that demand.

E-Bike Market in Kenya

Kenya has emerged as a promising hub for electric mobility in Africa, particularly in the two-wheeler segment. With rising fuel prices, increasing urban congestion, and a growing youth population seeking affordable transport, e-bikes offer an attractive alternative for both personal and commercial use.

The Kenyan government has shown strong support for clean energy adoption, offering policy frameworks and incentives for electric vehicle manufacturers and importers. According to a 2024 report by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), over 6,000 electric motorcycles were registered in Kenya, a number expected to double by the end of 2025 as new players like MBAK enter the market.

Local startups such as BasiGo, Roam, Ecobodaa, and now Carbon Zero Mobility have been instrumental in promoting e-mobility solutions across cities like Nairobi and Kisumu. With MBAK’s entry, the competition is set to intensify, bringing in global-grade battery tech, scalable manufacturing, and the potential to serve both domestic and regional markets.

MBAK Energy Solutions is a global leader in the development, manufacturing, and commercialization of non-fossil fuel technologies. With expertise in battery innovation and supply chain solutions, the company is positioning itself as a key player in the clean energy transition, not just in Africa, but worldwide.

As part of this mission, MBAK aims to democratize access to electric mobility by offering high-performance, low-emission solutions that can be locally assembled and maintained. Through its partnership with Carbon Zero Mobility, MBAK is also creating job opportunities and building local capacity in green manufacturing and after-sales service.
