CIC Insurance Embeds ESG and Boosts Farmer Resilience in New Sustainability Drive

CIC Insurance Group Plc has unveiled its 2025–2030 Sustainability Strategy, a six-year roadmap designed to embed environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles across all operations.
The plan aims to strengthen climate resilience, transparency, and long-term value creation, signaling a bold shift in how insurance contributes to sustainable development in East Africa.
The Group says the strategy will align its business model with both the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and national climate priorities, while also ensuring accountability in governance and innovation in inclusive insurance.
Protecting Farmers, Safeguarding Food Security
A central pillar of this sustainability push is agriculture insurance, which is already having a tangible impact on rural resilience. In 2024, CIC Insurance covered 56,700 farmers across Kenya, Uganda, and Malawi, providing protection against climate risks such as droughts and floods.
The insurer also paid out claims to more than 2,000 farmers affected by climate shocks, offering timely relief and enabling them to continue farming despite losses.
By cushioning smallholder farmers from climate-related risks, CIC is helping secure food systems, reduce poverty, and strengthen rural livelihoods. The initiative directly supports efforts to enhance climate adaptation in some of the most vulnerable communities in the region.
CIC Group Chairman Dr. Nelson Kuria said “As a leading cooperative insurer, we are turning our values of democracy, equity and social responsibility into action. In 2025 and beyond, we will strengthen transparent governance, deepen partnerships, support climate action, and deliver sustainable, inclusive insurance that advances ESG and 2030 sustainability goals, extending protection to millions more.”
