Lean Energy Celebrates Student Innovators in Clean Energy

Lean Energy Solutions has taken a bold step in championing Kenya’s clean energy transition with the launch of its inaugural University Essay Award on Renewable Energy.

The ceremony, held at the Kenya School of Government, brought together government leaders, academia, students, and energy stakeholders to celebrate the ideas of young Kenyans driving a sustainable future.

The nationwide competition, launched on June 30, 2025, attracted 846 submissions from universities across the country. Students were invited to present practical, high-impact ideas to accelerate Kenya’s clean energy agenda, with the overwhelming response underscoring Generation Z’s commitment to shaping the nation’s energy future.

The contest culminated on September 5, 2025, with the recognition of three outstanding winners: Alex Otieno (University of Nairobi), overall winner – awarded KES 70,000; Esther Awak (Mount Kenya University), first runner-up – awarded KES 50,000; and Benedict Kioko (Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology), second runner-up – awarded KES 30,000.

Speaking at the event, Kennedy Oduoyo, Head of Programs and Youth and Technical Advisor to the Cabinet Secretary at the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, emphasized the importance of youth engagement in national energy policy.

“This competition demonstrates that when given the right platform, our young people step forward with bold solutions capable of shaping policy and practice. The Ministry remains committed to mentoring and supporting them as partners in advancing Kenya’s energy transition,” he said.

For Lean Energy Solutions, the event marked a milestone in its mission to embed sustainability in business and community practices. Dinesh Tembhekar, Founder and Managing Director of Lean Energy Solutions, praised the creativity and passion of participants.

“The brilliance and energy demonstrated by the 846 participants affirms that our next generation of innovators is ready to step forward. At Lean Energy, we believe the transition to sustainability must be youth-driven, and we are proud to champion platforms that bring their ideas to life. This competition is not an end but the start of an annual tradition that will ensure young people remain at the heart of Kenya’s renewable energy transformation,” he said.

By recognizing young innovators, the Lean Energy Essay Award highlighted not only individual excellence but also the collective power of youth-driven ideas in accelerating Kenya’s renewable energy future. The event reaffirmed Lean Energy’s commitment to bridging academia, government, and industry in pursuit of practical solutions for a sustainable tomorrow.
