Safaricom’s Green Impact Hits KSh 1 Trillion as Company Accelerates Toward a Sustainable Future
Safaricom PLC has reported a True Value of KSh 1.1 trillion for the 2025 financial year, highlighting its growing environmental and social impact.
The figure, which is 16 times greater than the company’s financial profit, underscores Safaricom’s leadership in advancing Kenya’s green transition and sustainable growth.
According to its 2025 Sustainable Business Report, themed “Anchored on Purpose, Accelerating a Digital Future,” Safaricom contributed KSh 809 billion to Kenya’s GDP while strengthening its environmental and social initiatives.
During the year, Safaricom intensified its climate action efforts by planting over 830,000 trees and restoring 694 hectares of degraded land across eight counties, engaging more than 4,000 community members. To date, the company has grown 2.3 million trees toward its target of five million by 2030. It also fenced 15 kilometers of Kakamega Forest to protect biodiversity.
The company achieved a 99 percent recycling rate, collecting 190 tons of e-waste and 62 tons of plastic through its M-PESA Green Points initiative. These efforts earned Safaricom recognition on the CDP A-List for Climate Change and Supplier Engagement Assessment.
“Over the past 25 years, Safaricom has evolved into a purpose-led technology company guided by one simple mission: to transform lives by connecting people to people, people to opportunity, and people to information. At the heart of this journey is sustainability, embedded not as an obligation, but as a business imperative. Now in our 14th year of publishing our Annual Sustainable Business Report, we continue to hold ourselves accountable, using the Sustainable Development Goals as our blueprint for impact,” said Dr Peter Ndegwa, CEO, Safaricom PLC.
Safaricom’s sustainability agenda also extends to digital and financial inclusion. Through DigiFarm, the company disbursed KSh 945 million in loans to 169,000 farmers, supporting climate-smart agriculture. Meanwhile, smartphone ownership in its network rose from 44 to 50 percent, supported by the Lipa Mdogo Mdogo initiative.
Now in its 14th year of publishing the Sustainable Business Report, Safaricom says it continues to position itself as a purpose-led technology company committed to transforming lives, protecting the planet, and driving Kenya’s sustainable digital future.
