Konza’s Timbuktoo GreenTech Hub Seeks to Accelerate Africa’s Green Innovation

Kenya has taken a major step in positioning itself as a continental leader in green innovation with the launch of the Timbuktoo GreenTech Hub at Konza Technopolis.

The hub, part of the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Timbuktoo Africa Innovation Foundation initiative, aims to accelerate climate-smart and green technology startups across Africa.

Launched in December 2024, the Timbuktoo GreenTech Hub seeks to build a pipeline of bankable green enterprises and unlock large-scale investment opportunities in renewable energy, waste management, and climate resilience technologies.

The Timbuktoo GreenTech Hub’s mission is to transform Africa’s innovation landscape by mobilizing USD 1 billion, supporting 10,000 startups, scaling 1,000 of them over the next decade, and improving 100 million livelihoods while creating an estimated USD 10 billion in value across the continent.

Its focus areas include renewable energy generation and storage, clean energy access, waste management, energy efficiency, and climate change mitigation and adaptation solutions.

By nurturing innovations in these areas, the hub aims to help African countries fast-track their green transition, reduce carbon emissions, and foster inclusive, sustainable growth.

Kenya at the Heart of Africa’s GreenTech Movement

Located at Konza Technopolis, Kenya’s flagship smart city, the hub reinforces the country’s position as a regional innovation hub for sustainability and clean technology.

The GreenTech Hub will host a startup accelerator programme for entrepreneurs from across Africa, offering mentorship, technical assistance, access to investors, and support in scaling their innovations.

Speaking during the launch, President William Ruto described the initiative as a “turning point for African innovation,” noting that it aligns with Kenya’s commitment to transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy while creating opportunities for young innovators.

The Timbuktoo GreenTech Hub is a collaboration between the Government of Kenya, through the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, and the UNDP.

The initiative also benefits from the strategic partnership of the Timbuktoo Africa Innovation Foundation, which envisions establishing similar hubs across the continent to promote technology-driven sustainable development.

According to UNDP Kenya, the Konza-based hub will serve as a centre of excellence for green technology, bringing together startups, investors, policymakers, and researchers to co-create solutions for Africa’s most pressing environmental challenges.

Boosting Green Investment and Job Creation

The hub’s establishment is expected to attract green investments and stimulate job creation, particularly for youth and women working in sustainability-focused sectors.

By connecting innovators with financing and research institutions, the Timbuktoo GreenTech Hub will help transform prototypes into viable, market-ready products capable of scaling across Africa.

“This is not just about innovation; it’s about inclusive growth, environmental stewardship, and preparing Africa for the green economy of the future,” said UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner during the global launch of the Timbuktoo initiative.

The presence of the Timbuktoo GreenTech Hub at Konza Technopolis underscores the smart city’s growing reputation as a centre for technology, research, and sustainable development.

With both the Green Digital Innovation Hub (gDIH) and the Timbuktoo GreenTech Hub now hosted within Konza, Kenya is emerging as a leader in harnessing technology to drive climate action and sustainable industrialization in Africa.

As the continent accelerates its green transition, the Timbuktoo GreenTech Hub is set to play a defining role in shaping a cleaner, more resilient, and innovation-driven future.
