KWAL Commissions High-Capacity Solar Plant at Tatu City Facility

Kenya Wine Agencies Limited (KWAL) has officially commissioned a new 700kV rooftop solar power plant at its Tatu City manufacturing facility, a significant step in the beverage manufacturer’s transition toward renewable energy.

The new system, which was completed after eight months of installation and achieved full switch-over this week, is designed to generate a minimum of 15 percent of the factory’s annual electricity needs.

Developed under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with OFGEN Africa and in collaboration with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the grid-tied system powers factory operations using solar energy during the day and transitions seamlessly to the national grid at night.

According to KWAL, this hybrid approach ensures operational reliability while optimizing renewable power use. The shift is expected to yield an annual saving of 7.5 percent in energy costs based on current consumption trends.

“This investment reflects our broader ambition to accelerate our push to drive efficiencies, build a more sustainable business and embrace the opportunity to be part of Kenya’s ongoing renewable energy journey,” said Lina Githuka, Managing Director, KWAL.

The solar installation is part of KWAL’s wider strategy to align with Kenya’s goal of achieving 100 percent renewable energy by 2030. The Tatu City facility is already EDGE-certified, a standard established by the IFC for buildings that demonstrate significant resource efficiency.

Mwenda Kageenu, KWAL’s Director of Supply Chain, noted that the certification positions the company for better access to low-interest green financing.

“Our goal is to undertake a phased approach to expand our solar capacity to 1,500kV to maximize our use of renewable energy sources,” said Kageenu. “Our certification supports our ongoing drive to ensure we pursue a lower carbon footprint for our current operations.”

The project has received necessary approvals from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), Tatu Power, and the Tatu Development Control Company.
