Energy CS Wandayi Calms Fuel Shortage Fears Amid Middle East Conflict

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has moved to calm public jitters regarding the country’s fuel security, following a sharp escalation of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, Kenya’s primary source for petroleum products.

In a press statement released Tuesday, the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum confirmed that a comprehensive review of national stock levels indicates no immediate threat of a shortage.

Despite the “fluid situation” in the Gulf, Wandayi assured the country that the current inventory is robust enough to serve both domestic needs and the broader East African region.

“As at today, the country has sufficient stocks… we have scheduled imports for delivery up to end of April 2026,” the CS stated. “Therefore, as it stands, we are assured of security of supply.”

The Ministry is reportedly in high-level talks with Government-to-Government (G-G) suppliers to draft contingency plans should the conflict further disrupt international shipping lanes or production.

This strategy involves closely monitoring the situation as it evolves while maintaining constant engagement with international partners to ensure delivery timelines remain intact.

While global oil prices often fluctuate during Middle Eastern unrest, the Cabinet Secretary emphasized that the Ministry remains alert and is taking all necessary actions to prevent any interruptions at the pump. He concluded by assuring the public and all stakeholders that the government is committed to an uninterrupted supply chain. For now, the message is one of stability: the country’s petroleum supply remains secure for the next two months.
