Africa’s B Corp Community Grows 25% as Purpose-Driven Business Gains Ground

The number of businesses certified for meeting rigorous social and environmental standards in Africa jumped 25% last year, according to a new report released by B Lab Africa,  the clearest sign yet that the continent’s purpose-driven business movement is picking up speed.

The organisation’s first-ever Annual Report puts the total number of Certified B Corporations on the continent at more than 90, spread across multiple countries and industries. The certification, awarded by the non-profit B Lab, requires companies to demonstrate measurable performance across environmental, social, governance, and accountability standards.

B Lab Africa CEO Lucy Muigai said the numbers signal a turning point. “The B Corp movement is no longer a niche concept in Africa,” she said. “It is becoming a standard for excellence.”

The report also details two significant expansions from the past year. B Lab Africa launched the Resilient Sustainable Business program, targeting small and medium-sized enterprises that want to improve their impact credentials without yet pursuing full certification. The organisation also extended its operations into South Africa and Mauritius, widening its presence on the continent.

B Lab Africa is part of a global network that counts more than 10,000 certified companies across 105 countries. On the continent, more than 7,600 businesses, certified or not, are already using B Lab’s B Impact Assessment and SDG Action Manager tools to measure their performance.
