MTN Nigeria, First WATT Partner on Renewable Energy Rollout
MTN Nigeria and First WATT Renewable Limited have signed a renewable energy infrastructure partnership that will deploy 34 MWp of solar capacity and 40 MWh of battery storage across the telco’s critical facilities, including data centres, switch facilities, cable landing stations, and customer service centres.
The programme is structured around two components. The first is an Energy-as-a-Service arrangement covering MTN’s nationwide network of critical sites. The second targets electric vehicle charging, with 60 kW EV charging stations to be installed at eight MTN locations across Ikoyi, Matori, Ojota, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Asaba, Kano, and Ibadan.
The partnership is projected to prevent approximately 25,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e) over five years, subject to operational performance.
“This partnership is a defining milestone for First WATT,” said Oluwole Eweje, Chief Executive Officer of WATT Renewable Corporation. “We are helping to improve energy reliability at critical locations where uptime is essential.”
Tobechukwu Okigbo, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer at MTN Nigeria, said the deal sits within the company’s Project Zero initiative under its Doing for Planet sustainability pillar. “This partnership supports our efforts to reduce diesel dependence, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen the resilience of the systems that power connectivity,” he said.
