Bamburi Cement Undergoes ISO 50001 Energy Management Certification Audit
Bamburi Cement has hosted the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and an independent ISO audit team for a certification audit of the ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management Systems Standard, a step the company says reinforces its commitment to energy efficiency and sustainable manufacturing.
ISO 50001 is an internationally recognised framework that helps organisations improve energy performance, cut costs, and reduce environmental impact by embedding structured energy management into daily operations. Bamburi Cement is one of only three organisations in Kenya selected to pilot the standard’s implementation, a distinction the company attributes to its track record in sustainable manufacturing and its willingness to adopt global best practice ahead of wider industry uptake.
The audit is part of a broader sustainability push at the company, which has been investing in energy optimisation initiatives and newer technologies aimed at lowering the environmental footprint of its manufacturing activities. Bamburi Cement says it views energy management as a core pillar of its decarbonisation strategy and a contributor to climate action goals at both the national and global level.
In a statement following the audit, the company thanked KEBS and the ISO audit team for their guidance throughout the certification process, describing the exercise as both an achievement and an opportunity to further strengthen its internal energy management systems.
The certification audit comes as cement manufacturers across the region face growing pressure to cut emissions and energy intensity in a sector that is traditionally energy-heavy. Bamburi Cement said it will continue pursuing efficiency improvements and resource conservation measures as part of its long-term sustainability commitments to communities, customers, and future generations.
