NCBA Rolls Out Solar Leasing and Home Financing Solutions Across Kenya’s Coast Region

NCBA Bank has expanded its home financing offering in Kenya’s Coast region by introducing a solar leasing solution alongside its Easy Build financing product, as the bank seeks to make homeownership and property investment more accessible amid growing demand for housing in Mombasa and its surrounding areas.

The bank unveiled the solutions during its Mombasa Property Investment Tour, where prospective homeowners and investors were introduced to financing options aimed at reducing the cost of acquiring, building and powering homes.

The expansion comes as the Coast continues to attract increasing interest from property investors. According to Knight Frank, Mombasa contributes about 4.9% of Kenya’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), with the city’s prime residential market increasingly competing with Nairobi’s. Improved infrastructure, including the Dongo Kundu Bypass, rising diaspora investment and growing demand for residential, holiday and retirement homes have helped fuel the region’s real estate growth.

NCBA says the new solar leasing product is designed to address one of the persistent challenges facing homeowners access to reliable and affordable energy. Instead of making large upfront investments in solar systems, customers can now lease the technology, lowering the initial cost of adopting renewable energy.

The bank is pairing the initiative with its Easy Build financing solution, which allows customers to buy land and construct homes in phases based on their financial capacity rather than securing funding for the entire project at once.

The move comes despite significant gains in Kenya’s electricity access, which now stands at between 76 and 79% nationally, with urban electrification exceeding 97%. However, energy reliability and usage remain uneven in parts of the Coast, where many households continue to rely on alternative energy sources. At the same time, solar adoption has continued to grow, with roughly one in five Kenyan households already using solar energy solutions.

Additionally, emerging investment locations such as Vipingo have also seen increased demand as buyers seek master-planned communities offering long-term value appreciation alongside modern amenities.

During the property investment tour, participants visited developments including Ocean View Ridge, Kingswood Park, Awali and Pazuri while receiving guidance from legal advisers, valuers, developers and NCBA financial specialists on the property buying process.

The sessions covered legal due diligence, ownership documentation, mortgage structuring, affordability assessments, insurance and risk management, helping potential buyers better understand the financial and legal requirements involved in purchasing property.

NCBA said it currently supports property ownership across the Coast with a mortgage portfolio exceeding KES 1.1 billion and partnerships with seven property developers in Mombasa. The bank also continues to finance affordable housing projects and buy-and-build developments across the region.

Among the financing options highlighted during the event was a mortgage product offering up to 105% financing, enabling customers to cover not only the purchase price of a property but also related expenses such as legal fees and valuation costs, reducing upfront financial requirements.

For larger developments, NCBA also provides construction financing tied to project milestones, supported by in-house technical experts, including quantity surveyors who oversee project progress.

Furthermore, NCBA said it plans to replicate similar property investment engagements in other parts of the country as it expands access to home financing, sustainable energy solutions and investment opportunities for prospective homeowners.
