Ethiopia Secures $110 million AfDB Financing for 300MW Aysha Wind Power
Ethiopia has obtained up to $110 million funding from the African Development Bank Group for the development of the 300MW Aysha Power Project, a renewable energy initiative expected to become the country’s largest wind power facility upon completion. The investment marks a significant step in Ethiopia’s strategy to expand clean energy generation, strengthen electricity supply and diversify its power mix.
The AfDB financing package is comprising of $80 million from the banks ordinary resources, $20 million from the Clean Technology Fund and $10 million from the Sustainable Energy fund for Africa (SEFA). The project is estimated to cost approximately $508 million, with an extra $381.1 million expected to be mobilized from other development finance institutions through a blended financing infrastructure
Aysha Wind Power Project once operational, it is expected to increase Ethiopia’s installed wind energy capacity and support the country’s long-term objective of expanding renewable electricity while enhancing energy security. The project also aligns with the broader effort to reduce the reliance on conventional power sources by integrating more renewable energy into the national grid.
The financing will underscore the growing role of development finance institutions in accelerating large scale renewable energy projects across Africa. Blended financing models are increasingly being used to lower the investment risks, attract private capital and enable infrastructure projects that require significant upfront funding.
The project also highlights the expanding landscape within Africa’s renewable energy. Although solar power continues to account for the largest share in clean energy investments across Africa, wind energy, hydropower, geothermal energy and battery storage are becoming increasingly important in supporting a more diversified and resilient electricity system.
For Ethiopia, the Aysha Wind Power Project is expected to strengthen the country’s renewable energy portfolio while encouraging greater private sector participation in energy infrastructure development. The project further demonstrates how strategic partnerships between governments, development finance institutions and private investors can facilitate the delivery of large-scale clean energy projects.
The approval comes as African countries continue to accelerate investments in renewable energy to improve electricity, reinforce energy security and meet growing power demand. As financing for clean energy infrastructure expands, projects such as Aysha are expected to play a critical role in advancing the continent’s energy transition and positioning Africa as a key growth market for renewable energy investment.
