Kenya’s renewable energy growth is pushing the power grid toward smarter storage and digital management

Kenya is moving to modernize its electricity grid as the growing share of wind and solar power increases the need for a more flexible, stable, and resilient energy system.
The State Department for Energy, in partnership with Huawei Kenya, convened the Kenya Energy Transition Forum 2026 in Nairobi, bringing together government officials, energy industry executives, technology firms, development partners and research institutions to discuss the country’s changing power sector.
The Principal Secretary for the State Department for Energy, Alex Wachira, noted that Kenya stands at a pivotal moment in its energy transition; therefore, there is a need to integrate green energy solutions, particularly battery energy storage, to address rising peak demands and lower generation costs.
Furthermore, Kenya has significant geothermal, hydro, wind and solar resources, which have supported the country’s shift towards cleaner electricity. However, the increasing use of variable renewable sources, particularly wind and solar, is creating a greater need for technologies that can balance fluctuations in power supply.
Wachira highlighted smart grids, advanced grid management systems, digitalisation, better forecasting, power electronics and energy storage as critical technologies for addressing the challenges posed by the growing integration of renewable energy into Kenya’s power system.
The forum also examined grid-forming energy storage, smart grid technologies and wireless network solutions, with discussions focused on how these technologies can be deployed at scale.
Huawei Kenya Deputy CEO for Public Affairs James Sun said the company was committed to supporting Kenya’s energy transition through technology and practical solutions.
He said grid-forming energy storage and smart grid technologies could help the country integrate more renewable power and expand renewable energy capacity.
Additionally, the company said that its digital power division offers grid forming PV inverter technology paired with battery energy storage to address the country’s power quality and system strength challenges.
