KCB signs deal to fund green campus upgrades at public universities
KCB Bank Kenya has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the country’s public universities to finance their transition to cleaner, more efficient and climate-resilient campuses.
The partnership marks a new phase of collaboration to address financial, infrastructure and sustainability challenges facing the higher education sector.
Through the deal, KCB will support investments in solar energy, energy efficiency, clean cooking technologies, waste management, biogas systems, solar water heating and rainwater harvesting.
The lender said the interventions are expected to help institutions lower operating costs, improve resource efficiency and build greater resilience.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, KCB Bank Kenya Managing Director Annastacia Kimtai said public universities continue to face pressure from constrained budgets, rising operational costs and significant infrastructure needs.
She said diversifying revenue streams and improving the efficiency with which institutions manage their finances will remain critical.
“Access to appropriate financing remains one of the barriers to the clean-energy transition for learning institutions, and KCB is prepared to use its financial expertise and partnerships to help address that gap,” Kimtai said.
She added that universities investing in renewable energy, energy efficiency and responsible water management can cut long-term operating costs while demonstrating environmental leadership.
The agreement follows a separate MoU KCB signed with the State Department for Higher Education and Research to support the development of more sustainable and resilient universities across the country.
That partnership focused on practical interventions to help universities reduce their environmental footprint, improve resource efficiency and lower operating costs.
